Signature Sempé

January 2023, I worked with L’Alliance New York’s Programming to create the exhibition wallpaper design for Signature Sempé, a show celebrating the work of Jean-Jacques Sempé, internationally known French illustrator and cartoonist.

The project incorporated 112 New Yorker covers into a large-scale wallpaper that would interract with 17 framed works on the same wall. Using the exact measurements of each frame, I mocked up the wall to scale and tested a few arrangements to find a composition that felt balanced and intentional. Once we had the placement of the framed works, the remaining space was used to organize the covers into a 22 x 7 grid, grouped loosely by theme.

The final product created a visually rich backdrop, giving structure to a large archive of work, while also maintaining a clear relationship with the framed pieces.
